How does it all work?

By using a third party such as Getty Images to sell my images, I give up all negotiation power when it comes to how much a photo sells and for whom. I also get 20% of that sale.

Why would anyone want to do this?

Because Getty is the largest market when it comes to buying and selling stock images. You have to go where the customers are.

By transferring all these license rights to Getty, special, I put my photos in front of people and companies from around the world.

These are the people who would probably never have seen these images without an app like this. That means I can sell these images more often than not on my own.

Which means that the 20% I get from sales still has more money than I can do to put in the hard work of getting my photos in front of customers. And all I have to do is send Getty photos.

What I really have to do OK, so it's not as easy as just uploading photos.

They need a certain level of reduction and organization. I have to think about whether they are "marketable". Do I see this image being used to sell a product, idea, concept or lifestyle?

This reveals another important part of the search which is keywording. For each photo I upload I have to add details. Location, date, brief description and up to 50 keywords. 50 is the key word when you think about it.

For any of the pictures I have posted in this article, try to come up with 50 words each to describe the place. It is very important that these keywords are added, and that they match exactly what the customer would be looking for in a stock photo. This introduces new ideas on how to interpret a picture. "Copy Space", "Backgrounds", "Incidental People", "Travel Area". These are some of the common keywords I add to photos to make them more searchable for people who want to take normal photos. Now imagine you have 300 images on a trip to New Zealand to download and each one needs 50 relevant keywords. This takes time.

How can you make money?

How many of you have a hard drive full of pictures sitting there? Images are not bad but you do not want to print or share them because they look too simple or generic.

Why not look in the photo gallery?

There are many stock websites out there besides Getty Images. Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Stocksy or any other good thing with the word "stock" on it.

Find out which ones fit your photography style and make sure you learn how much they cost the photographer and whether they require special rights to sell your photos or not, which they may like. Most of them have "tests" that you will need to pass before you can become a donor, but once you get to uploading photos, all those images that collect visible dust on your computer can make you money for the first hard work.

Make an effort to find yourself in the presence of paying customers and the photography site will do the rest. Please, please, please don't just throw them on Unsplash or label them as free to use as this means for everyone that any images they find online are free to use and use. Stock photography can be a great way to start generating income that will grow over time as you build your * ahem *… stock portfolio.

That's an indication right there. Also, my boss was one of the most immeasurable people I have ever met and I was not the only one who felt that this was it. He was cold with stones.

How Did Getty Images Get Started?

Getty Images is a British-American company best known for selling stock images online. They make more than a trillion dollars a year in profits. That’s an amazing amount of business money that none of us can think of to change the game or change the game.
